5 Signs You Have a Bulging Disc

Written By Eldorado Chiropractic on December 9, 2020

rsz backpain3Disc bulging and herniation (tearing and leaking) occur most frequently in people between the ages of 20 to 50. A bulging disc is often caused by improper lifting, sitting for long periods, driving frequently, and performing repetitive and straining activities.

5 Common Symptoms of Disc Injuries

The bulging of a spinal disc often happens very slowly over a long period. Strenuous activities and/or general wear and tear cause the soft, fluid center of the disc to squish out of one side of the hard, outer casing.

Here are 5 signs to look for to identify a possible bulging disc:

1. Pain or Tingling in Extremities

A disc injury resulting in nerve obstruction may be identified by painful or tingling sensations in limbs and extremities. Upper spine injuries may affect the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers. Lumbar disc bulges can cause nerve pain in the legs and feet.

2. Pain That Radiates to the Chest or Stomach

Pain from a mid-spine bulge can affect the stomach or chest regions. If you experience these symptoms, have a medical examination as soon as possible. Although these may be signs of a disc injury, they are also related to heart, lung, and gastrointestinal failure.

3. Muscle Spams and Pain in the Lower Back

Most disc injuries occur in the lumbar region, leading to pain and muscle spasms in the lower back. The Pain may also spread to the buttocks, thighs, or feet. Sciatica, which only affects one side of the lower body, is a potential consequence of disc injuries.

4. Muscle Weakness

If you are experiencing unexplained muscle weakness, this may also be an indication of a bulging disc causing pressure on nerves.

5. Pain that Worsens

If certain movements, including walking, standing, or sitting, cause back or limb pain to increase, this is a good indicator that there may be a disc injury.

See a Chiropractor About Bulging Disc Treatment

If you are experiencing the symptoms of a disc injury, speak to a chiropractor about treatment options. Using spinal traction, chiropractors can create space between the vertebrae to restore the discs and alleviate pain.
